Disciples of Christ
Azalea Hills Christian Church
About Us
The Azalea Hills Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, was formed on January 19, 1969, by the merger of Western Hills Christian Church and the Azalea Christian Church. The new congregation was located on the former site of the Western Hills Christian Church, at 4358 Cottage Hill Rd. (Corner of Cottage Hill and University Blvd.)
The Azalea Christian Church property was sold and the surplus was used to reduce the mortgage of the new location.
This united effort was accomplished under the auspices of the Regional Board of Christian Churches, DOC, whose offices are in Birmingham. The two former congregations of Western Hills and Azalea Churches were located in the same general area and after much study and meeting together, it was decided that the two congregations could more effectively serve the area by uniting. Accordingly, the Azalea Christian Church drew up and presented an instrument of writing which formed the basis for uniting the two congregations. At a meeting of the two congregations on January 7, 1969, with a committee from the Regional Board, Christian Church, DOC, this instrument of writing was unanimously accepted and plans for completing the union finalized. It was agreed at this time that the first public service of the new Azalea Hills Christian Church would be conducted on January 19, 1969, beginning with Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. followed by morning worship at 11:00 a.m.
The second period of major transition in the life of our congregation was the result of the decision to relocate to our present location at 9191 Cottage Hill Road. This decision to relocate was the result of a study of the major growing trends of Mobile.
Upon the sale of the property at 4358 Cottage Hill Road, the church located temporarily to 924 Butler Drive. The congregation met here from April 8, 1986 until September 8, 1987.
The new church facility, located at 9191 Cottage Hill Road was completed in September of 1987. The first worship service was held on Sunday, September 13, 1987.
With much effort and dedication from our members, the dream of a multi-purpose Family Life Center was realized in the fall of 2007. God continues to bless us at Azalea Hills!
